What is Health & Wellness Coaching?

Health and wellness coaches help clients make positive and lasting changes to their health. The coach guides clients through the process of creating a vision for their health and well-being, developing a healthy mindset and healthy habits, and encouraging them every step of the way until they accomplish their goals.

I personally help clients develop step-by-step plans to help them with:

  • Stress management
  • Prioritizing self-care
  • Maintaining a positive and healthy mindset
  • Sticking to an exercise plan
  • Making healthier food choices
  • Balancing wellness and a busy schedule
  • And much more

As an integrative health coach, I view health and wellness from a holistic perspective which means I’m interested in the whole person and what it means to thrive mentally, physically, spiritually.

What coaching is not

A health coach is not necessarily a nutritionist, dietitian, or personal trainer. While they may be knowledgeable on these topics, they might not be qualified to offer you nutritional or fitness advice.

A health coach is not a therapist or psychologist. While they can help clients to improve their mindsets, they are typically not qualified to work with clients who have psychological disorders.

Most coaches will list their coaching qualifications and offerings on their services page, so be sure to check there first before working with someone.

How does a health & wellness coach help?

Coaching is about having an accountability partner who will support and encourage you even when you feel ready to quit. A coach provides support and inspiration to continue moving forward, even if you are dealing with a health-related issue.

No matter what health conditions or ailments you may have, a health coach encourages clients to recognize that living a thriving life is about making healthy choices that positively impact their mental, physical, and emotional health.

How do you spot a legitimate health coach?

This is an area that can be a little controversial, and it ultimately depends on your preference and comfort levels. Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide what’s important for you when it comes to a coaching’s credibility.

That being said, many coaches out there are doing what they do based on self-taught principles. There are also coaches who have been through regimented training such as a master’s level program or coach-specific curriculum.

They may also be certified through ICF, ICHWC, or another credentialing program. Here are some examples of health coaching programs that might help.

Since coaching is about helping a client dig deeper into the answers within themselves, a coach asks rather than advises. If a coach is telling you what to do more than asking you what you want to do, they may be acting as a consultant rather than a coach.

Do I need a health & wellness coach?

Now that you have a better understanding of what a health & wellness coach does, you might be wondering if a coach could be beneficial for you.

Here are a few questions to get you thinking:

  • Do you have trouble sticking to health-related goals?
  • Do you struggle to keep a calm and positive mindset?
  • Are you always low on energy and motivation?
  • Do you struggle with work-life balance?
  • Do you find it difficult to prioritize your health?
  • Do you rarely let yourself relax?
  • Do you want to make healthy changes to your lifestyle but you’re not sure where to start?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, a health & wellness coach would be a great option for you. Of course this is quite a commitment time-wise and financially, but the health results you will achieve will be beyond worth it.

  • So exciting that you’re almost done with your Master’s program! That’s so huge, and such a cool accomplishment. Can’t wait to see the official launch of your services. :) Hope you’ve been well!

  • There’s a chance I’ll be reaching out to you via email soon…but I am starting my Master of Arts through the University of Minnesota’s Integrative Health and Wellbeing Coaching program in the fall! I LOVE this post, and really hope to channel in the information since you listed it so well. When I tell people about my program, I find myself fumbling for the right statements. Most people have said “oh like a personal trainer or nutritionist” and I go “no, more of looking at a person’s entire health (meaning all the facets) and being by their side as they try to make changes to be more holistically”. I really really look forward to talking with you soon over email. PS, I listened to you on Georgie’s podcast and felt I needed to reach out then; life got a little crazy, though!

  • I think one of the biggest things about working with a health coach is the accountability! It never hurts to have someone else reminding you to do all those healthy things you know you should be doing but somehow let fall by the wayside. And I agree with Kelsy Ann, too, that, even though health coaching is gaining in popularity, people still aren’t quite sure what it is. Someone once advised me to show them rather than tell them, like do a mini session right then and there!

  • I love the idea of this so much!! I’d love to hear more about what you do on this blog too. Congrats on all the exciting newness!
