What exactly does a health coach do anyway?
You’ve probably heard the term health coach floating around a lot lately. The field of health coaching has been growing rapidly over the years as more people have become conscious of their health and well-being.
Nowadays, there are so many coaches out there that it’s tricky to know who to work with and what the benefits of coaching even are. After all, what is health coaching? What does a health coach do?
Since I’ll be finishing up my master’s degree in Health & Wellness Coaching in August (so crazy and exciting!), I thought it was time I shared some insights into what a health and wellness coach does, as well as how to choose a coach and the benefits of working with one.

What is Health & Wellness Coaching?
Health and wellness coaches help clients make positive and lasting changes to their health. The coach guides clients through the process of creating a vision for their health and well-being, developing a healthy mindset and healthy habits, and encouraging them every step of the way until they accomplish their goals.
I personally help clients develop step-by-step plans to help them with:
- Stress management
- Prioritizing self-care
- Maintaining a positive and healthy mindset
- Sticking to an exercise plan
- Making healthier food choices
- Balancing wellness and a busy schedule
- And much more
As an integrative health coach, I view health and wellness from a holistic perspective which means I’m interested in the whole person and what it means to thrive mentally, physically, spiritually.
What coaching is not
A health coach is not necessarily a nutritionist, dietitian, or personal trainer. While they may be knowledgeable on these topics, they might not be qualified to offer you nutritional or fitness advice.
A health coach is not a therapist or psychologist. While they can help clients to improve their mindsets, they are typically not qualified to work with clients who have psychological disorders.
Most coaches will list their coaching qualifications and offerings on their services page, so be sure to check there first before working with someone.
How does a health & wellness coach help?
Coaching is about having an accountability partner who will support and encourage you even when you feel ready to quit. A coach provides support and inspiration to continue moving forward, even if you are dealing with a health-related issue.
No matter what health conditions or ailments you may have, a health coach encourages clients to recognize that living a thriving life is about making healthy choices that positively impact their mental, physical, and emotional health.
How do you spot a legitimate health coach?
This is an area that can be a little controversial, and it ultimately depends on your preference and comfort levels. Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide what’s important for you when it comes to a coaching’s credibility.
That being said, many coaches out there are doing what they do based on self-taught principles. There are also coaches who have been through regimented training such as a master’s level program or coach-specific curriculum.
Since coaching is about helping a client dig deeper into the answers within themselves, a coach asks rather than advises. If a coach is telling you what to do more than asking you what you want to do, they may be acting as a consultant rather than a coach.
Do I need a health & wellness coach?
Now that you have a better understanding of what a health & wellness coach does, you might be wondering if a coach could be beneficial for you.
