How To Squeeze In A Morning Workout

I’m one for getting my workout over with as soon as possible, even if that means squeezing exercise in at 6am before work. I love knowing that no matter how the rest of the day turns out, I can at least feel like I’ve accomplished something.
Lacking time & motivation in the morning? Here's how to squeeze in a good workout anyway!
Props to you if you prefer working out in the evening and actually have success doing that, but I just cannot seem to get my butt out the door at the end of the day. Probably something to do with the 5pm swarm of sweaty bodies at the gym combined with my tendency to get a bit hangry by that time.

If you’re similarly not amused by the evening crowd but you also can’t seem to find the time for a  sweaty morning session, here are my tips for you:

The Night Before
Plan your workouts.

If you’re going to the gym, write out every move you plan to do. If you’re doing a video, load the video before going to bed so all you have to do is hit refresh in the morning. BlogilatesFitness Blender, and ZuzkaLight have some great videos. Tip: try doing a short, high-intensity workout that doesn’t take up your entire morning.

Make a playlist.

Every Sunday, I make some time to find some new tunes because I get bored of music like no other.

Lay out your workout gear.

Top, bra, pants, socks, shoes, done.

Pack your bag.

If you’re going to the gym, make sure you have everything you need for tomorrow. For me, it’s headphones, phone armband, gloves, and my workout notebook.

Give yourself enough time.

Make sure you factor in the time it takes to get ready before your workout (getting dressed, doing your hair) and for stretching, showering, and eating afterward. Then set your alarm.

The Day Of
Find something that will make you get out of bed.

Sometimes all I wanna do is watch old episodes of Friends. If I can watch it while doing my Pilates routine at home, I’m going to be way more excited to work out. You know what motivates you, so use that to help get you out of bed.

Put your alarm across the room.

This usually gets me out of bed because the constant drone of the alarm is too annoying not to turn off.

Guzzle water.

You ain’t gonna workout after waking up with a dry throat so go drink a glass, you thirsty animal.

My fave is a slice of toast with peanut butter and 1/2 banana. It’s not gonna sit around in my belly while I’m working out, and it means I won’t be starving and hating life.

Do your eye makeup.

This may seem weird/not work for you, but I usually do my eye makeup before working out because I know it won’t sweat down my face. You just have to be careful not to wash it off with your face wash.

Brush your teeth.

What gets you motivated to workout in the morning?

  1. I’ve missed your posts! I haven’t figured out how to eat breakfast, digest, workout, and shower all BEFORE work. I’m all for the afternoon workout, right after work. If I sit down for too long, I won’t end up going! :)

    1. I’m trying to be more consistent with posting, my goal is two a week from now on! :) Usually I eat a piece of toast with peanut butter and 1/2 a banana 30 minutes before my workout and that seems to work okay! And then I eat my ‘real’ breakfast after my workout ;)

  2. Yes, this post rocks! It’s totally possible to squeeze in a morning workout! Yoga is the first thing I do when I wake up. I’m too sleepy to overthink it. I just get up and start. It’s become a habit now. I feel much better when I do it than when I don’t, which makes it easy to stick to. It’s not an intense workout, just 20 minutes and the first 10 minutes is lying down. It helps me wake up, but nice and slow. I never thought I could actually exercise everyday, especially not in the mornings. But I found a yoga video I love and figured out a morning routine to make it work.

    1. I love that you just get up and do it! That’s one thing I struggle with. My boyfriend and I try to wake up at 4:45 to go to the gym (we have to go that early because his job starts early), and we always do that ‘should we go or not go?’ routine back and forth. I know we just need to get up and go, no questions or hesitations about it.
