How To Create A Daily Self-Care Routine For Mind, Body & Soul

Most of us struggle to practice self-care on a regular basis. You probably know how important it is for your well-being, but finding the time for a daily self-care routine is a different matter.

Beyond the lack of time, you might feel guilty for taking time out for self-care (work is more important, right? *cough* wrong). And then on top of that, you REALLY want a solid daily routine but you totally suck at sticking to one. You crave structure in your day that gives you some quality time for yourself.

If you want to make self-care part of your daily life, try following a simple daily routine for the mind, body, and soul. Here's how to create a daily routine that helps you practice self-care on the regular without taking up a ton of time!

Well, my friends, I have a solution to this ultimate struggle: a daily routine for your mind, body and soul. Since many of us struggle to practice self-care AND stick to a solid morning routine, I thought combining the two sounded like a good solution.

This idea came about in 2015 when I wrote about the self-care power hour. By that I mean the concept of spending 20 x 20 x 20 minutes on your mind, body, and soul (MBS) every single day. I thought it was time to revisit this idea because of the impact it’s had on my ability to practice self-care on a regular basis.

If you truly want to make self-care part of your daily life, try following a simple daily routine for the mind, body, and soul. Today, I’m sharing how you can create a solid daily routine that helps you practice self-care on the regular without taking up a ton of time. My favorite topic ever. Let’s dig in!

The Mind, Body, Soul Connection

Our health and overall well-being is not a one-sided thing. Our physical, mental, and spiritual health are deeply connected and work together to create harmony or discontent in our lives.

These elements can strongly affect each other. When your body is unhealthy, your mind might suffer. If you’re not fueling your soul, you might have trouble finding the physical the energy to do anything.

That’s why I’m a firm believer in creating a daily routine that helps take care of these different elements of your life. When I make time for my mind, body, and soul on a daily basis, I can practice self-care in a super simple and easy way.

Now that it’s been about two years since I wrote about the self-care power hour, I wanted to revisit this idea because I still do incorporate mind, body, and soul practices into my daily routine.

Mind, body, and soul self-care is has become ingrained in my daily life, and it has honestly changed the way I view self-care and wellness. Not only do I get to do things I enjoy doing, I also feel a lot better about myself.

My Daily Self-Care Routine

These days, I don’t always spend 20 minutes on each practice because meditating for 20 minutes is not my jam (gimme 5-10 mins, and I’m golden). That being said, 30 minutes to an hour is the ideal amount of time to reap the benefits of self-care time. With that in mind, here’s what my usual routine looks like:

Mind

For my mind, I still find that meditation is the best tool for keeping me calm. Reading and journaling also help me start my day from a positive place.

Body

For my body, daily walks are my favorite thing. Some people hate walking, but I will gladly do it everyday because it gets my body moving, and I can quiet my mind at the same time. I also throw in strength training 2x a week, and I’m slowing trying to incorporate more yoga into my routine.

Soul

For my soul, this is where it gets a little ambiguous. The soul isn’t exactly a concrete entity. But what I’ve learned is that I can start my day on the right foot when I feel inspired or when I’ve had a good laugh. That means sometimes I’ll listen to podcasts, watch YouTube videos, or squeeze in an episode of a show on Netflix. That may seem unproductive, but it helps me start my day on a positive note.

Usually I flow through these different activities for about an hour after I’ve woken up. It ends up looking like this:

  • Meditate or journal (5-10 mins)
  • Walk and/or strength training (20-30 mins)
  • Shower &  eat breakfast (10 mins)
  • Get ready while listening to a podcast or watching videos (30 mins)

I find that this type of routine really sets the tone for the day and gets me in the right frame of mind. Of course there are days when I simply don’t have the time to do all of these things (or, to be real, I just don’t feel like it), but I am pretty consistent for the most part.

How To Create Your Daily MBS Routine

Now that you know what my daily MBS routine looks like, let’s talk about how you can create your own routine:

1. Brainstorm practices and activities.

Create a reference list of activities you enjoy doing for your mind, body, and soul. Check out The Ultimate Self-Care Toolkit for some ideas. Once you’ve created your list, decide what your routine will look like for tomorrow (yes, start tomorrow!).

2. Carve out time for your routine.

Figure out how much time you can spare for your mind, body, and soul. Maybe it’s a full hour or only 20 minutes. From there, figure out what time you’re going to start your routine. If you don’t have time in the morning, try this out in the evening instead.

3. Switch it up

The best thing about a MBS routine is that you can switch up frequently. Whether you change the types of activities you’re doing or the order you do them in, switching things up will keep you from feeling stuck in your routine.

  1. Your advice to take time for all three entities of self-has majorly improved by day to day routine! Instead of each morning, however, I’ve chosen to apply your ideas to my before-bed habits. I too love to journal and have found solace for my mind in journaling each night to process my thoughts and feelings from the day. I also enjoy doing yoga in order to relax my muscles and body and prepare for a relaxing night of rest. And I spend time focusing on my soul, meditating and saying my prayers as well. Thanks for your tips, I am becoming healthier and more well-rounded thanks to your guiding words!
