If you’re someone who tries to maintain a positive mindset, you may have noticed that it’s not easy to stay focused or enthusiastic when everything and everyone is fighting for your attention.
Through the news, blog posts, podcasts, videos, emails, or conversations, there are so many ways information can overload us. This overload clouds our brains and causes us more stress than necessary. That’s when the negative vibes start to take over.

Contrary to what you may think, my mind is not always a blissful place. Though my blog is called The Blissful Mind, most of what I share relates to my own struggles to keep my mind peaceful and calm.
I can’t lie to you and say I always have a blissful mind, but I can tell you I’m always seeking ways to calm my crazy mind down. I know I need to keep my head a clear and safe place because if my mindset is negative, my whole well-being is negatively impacted.
We are all so overwhelmed, yet we keep pushing forward without letting go of anything. In this post, I’m sharing five ways to free up some headspace and get your peace of mind back.
How To Do A Mindset Detox

1. Give your brain space
Is your mind feeling cluttered? One of my favorite ways to free up space in my mind is to do a brain dump. I know that’s not a pretty term, but it’s when you get a piece of paper and write ANYTHING that comes to mind. Let go of the information you don’t need in your brain by spring cleaning your to-do list.
Another way to free up space is to bring awareness to any negative thought patterns you may be having. What do you keep dwelling on that’s taking up headspace? If you’re an anxious thinker, check out my post for dealing with anxious thoughts.
2. Reduce noise & negativity
If you’re anything like me, you easily absorb other people’s energy. That’s why it’s so important to be around positive and good-humored people. The same is true for the types of information you consume online. If we don’t spend any time alone without interference from others, we lose sense of what our own thoughts and opinions are.
Follow and interact with people who add value or positivity to your life. Then, ask yourself how you can remove what is not valuable to you. Unsubscribe, unfollow, and perhaps try a media detox to give your brain a break.

3. Go to your happy place
Identify what calms your mind instead of overwhelming it. This could include activities like meditation, reading, yoga, or watching your favorite TV show. It could also be a physical space like your bedroom, a yoga studio, or the middle of a forest. Whenever your thoughts start to turn negative, go to your happy place to calm your mind.
4. Reduce distractions
One of the reasons we get overwhelmed and distracted is because we multi-task. By now, you’ve probably heard that multi-tasking is not good for our brains or our productivity levels. This constant need to gain more information by scrolling through the internet is only causing us more stress.
Instead, practice that art of not reacting to every impulsive thought or idea you have. One way to do this is the one-tab challenge. Sound too extreme? These mindfulness practices are great for clearing your mind and preventing impulsive actions.
5. Schedule time to reset
Grab your planner and pencil in time to brain dump, stay away from social media, and do activities that keep your mind calm. Purposely carve out and schedule time to let your mind reset. After all, having a blissful mind is something that genuinely takes commitment and dedication.
P.S. I highly recommended reading Essentialism by Greg McKeown if you want to get more focused on the things that truly matter to you.

Very great advice it’s really important not to over stress as it will be worse for our health and our productivity.
I just scheduled a brain dump every friday night and scheduled a social media detox on Sunday for the month of June. I am actually excited about it, no social.media at all on Sundays. Thanks for sharing your ways!
I have to do a brain dump at least once a week to stay sane! Not having a clear idea of what I need to get done on a given day or week messes with my sleep and productivity so much. I love the idea of a “one-tab challenge” too!
Deciding to stop reading the news, slashing my Facebook list, etc. has been the best thing for me, mentally!
I did a huge cleaning among my Friends list and Liked Pages on Facebook. Now, i only follow people with positive thoughts and sites with positive posts on Facebook.
The best way for me to clean my mind is doing workout and my cure for anxiety is listening ASMR videos on Youtube. ,, Gentle Whispering” is my favourite artist. :)
I definitely have to put Essentialism on my to-read list! I hate the term “brain dump,” too, but it really is key to getting out all the built up negative thoughts.
This was such lovely and helpful advice. Thank you. Xxx best wishes x
Keep Calm and start writing ~

I’m not good at keeping a blissful mind at all! But all of these tips sound super helpful. I’m definitely bookmarking this page so I can make a habit of doing these things. Thanks for sharing!
This post truly resonates with me and I just started Essentialism. I can already tell that it will be such a transformative book for me. I can’t wait to finish it!
I completely agree that trying to maintain a blissful mind can be very hard, but with more and more practice it does come easier. I find that by reading posts like this really help remind me on ways to have a relaxed mind.
I find the best way for me to detox my mind from a busy day is to do simple tasks that require minimal thinking but with needed focus. My favourites are folding laundry, washing dishes, vacuuming… afterwards you feel refreshed because you stopped worrying and you got something done which the feeling of being productive is wonderful!
I really liked the part where if you’re around negative people it really affects you, and it’s so true! It’s crazy how other people’s feelings can make us better or worse if we let them.
Very good post Catherine!
I have to agree with every single point you make! I recently underwent Mindfulness training at work and they told us some really similar stuff! I wanted to do some outside reading and that’s when I found you!
Mindfulness is such an impactful thing on someone’s life, so you have to be super informative, which this definitely is!
I’m pretty chill at home, but at work I’m definitely going to use these points to help, as well as the training I had. You actually said a lot of what they said which makes me feel very happy! You can find them here if it interests you :) https://www.righttrackconsultancy.co.uk/mindfulness-training/

Thank you for your blog. It has been very useful. Having come out of a bad marriage of 10 years where the man I married controlled and manipulated me and my children I have now started a new relationship 4 months ago with a lovely man who is amazing. So very different to what you am use to. I have noticed my anxiety and thoughts get away on me and I will re play things over and over until I can no longer bare it and have to discuss and take it out in the person days later. Reading your post and answering your questions made alot of sense and the question about 5 years from now hit home. Is it going to matter in 5 yrs time? NO…..what is consuming my thoughts is wasted time and energy and I want to be able to move forward past this and not let my negative thought consume me. I want to be the best of me all the time. Thank you for sharing your post I will put it into practise.
